Helpful Storage Tips to Protect Your Belongings

Here are a few simple tips to help keep your items safe and organized while in storage:

1. Elevate items off the floor using furniture covers, tarps, pallets, or moving pads to reduce the risk of moisture exposure.

2. Protect furniture legs and corners with wrap, pads, or covers to prevent scratches. Covering items with a tarp can provide an added layer of moisture protection.

3. Avoid using printed newspapers for packing, as ink can transfer and stain your belongings, and attract pests.

4. Place items you’ll need more often near the front of your unit. Keep seasonal clothing and frequently used boxes easy to access in case your storage needs last longer than expected.

5. Maximize space by storing smaller items inside drawers and large appliances such as stoves or refrigerators. Towels, linens, and toys work well for this.

6. Disassemble large items like bed frames, tables, and bulky furniture when possible. Keep hardware such as screws and bolts together by taping them securely to the item.

7. Clearly label all boxes on multiple sides so contents are easy to identify.

8. Clothing that is normally hung should be stored in wardrobe boxes to help prevent wrinkles and damage.

9. Do not store flammable, hazardous, or perishable items, including paint, chemicals, perishables or food.

10. Pack boxes so they weigh no more than about 30 pounds. Seal boxes securely using packing or masking tape.

11. Use sturdy plastic totes with secure lids whenever possible to provide added protection.
